MY Promise to you...

I recognize that it requires a great deal of strength and courage to seek out help. I will seek to understand. I will provide a safe, accepting, judgment-free, and comfortable place. I will work to help you identify your strengths and build upon them.

Counseling allows individuals to better understand themselves and others, set personal goals, and work toward desired change. It is a personal opportunity to receive support and experience growth during challenging times. It is a key piece of the support system that will help utilize innate resilience and strengths.

We will look closely at current thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that can help make decisions about whether specific thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are helping or hindering their wellbeing. Counseling is a collaborative process that involves a confidential and professional relationship that focuses on personal obstacles. We work objectively to clarify issues, gain insight into thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and to deal effectively with these obstacles in a healthy way.

play therapy

“Toys are the children’s words and play is their language.” -Dr. Garry Landreth

Play is the natural language of children. Even as adults, we sometimes struggle to express how we feel. Children may find it even more difficult to do so. Play therapy uses a child’s natural means of expression, play, as a way to help them process their feelings, solve problems, and learn new coping skills.

Play therapy is a research-based, developmentally appropriate therapy that is most often used with children ages 3-12. In play therapy, the play therapist provides selected toys and art materials that the child can use to share about the concerns they are having. During play therapy, the play therapist will work with your child to develop skills such as appropriately expressing their feelings, learning to regulate their emotions and behaviors, following limits, and taking responsibility.

Play therapy can be helpful for many different issues, including:
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Problem behaviors at home or school
  • ADHD
  • Anger or aggressive behaviors
  • Grief
  • Family issues such as divorce or separation
  • Life transitions
  • Developmental delays or Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Victim of domestic violence, abuse, or neglect
  • Experienced natural disaster or traumatic event
  • Chronic illness or medical procedures

How do I talk to my child about coming to play therapy?
You are going to meet a person (insert name) whose job it is to play and talk to kids. You will meet in a playroom and can play with the toys there in lots of the ways you like. You can share what’s on your mind or play in ways to share how you feel.

How Play Therapy Works
Introducing Andrew

Psychoanalytic therapy (also known as psychodynamic) uses free flowing talk and conversation to uncover facets of personality that influence behavior. By bringing up and examining memories, triggers, early experiences, and relationships, we become more aware of how and why we make the choices we make. This therapy operates on the assumption that our lives are shaped by “subconscious” urges and desires. By understanding ourselves better, we may address unresolved problems, heal open wounds, and make more informed and intentional decisions about our lives, behaviors, and relationships.
